Volkstheater
Munich‘s district „Schlachthofviertel“ has undergone a major transformation. While in the 1990s it was still known as the „glass shard quarter“, it is now, together with the Dreimühlenviertel, a popular residential area. The formerly grey Zenettiplatz has become a popular place to stay with a mobility hub thanks to the „City2Share“ project. While the slaughterhouse (where the district got its name from) is still in operation today, the cattle yard area to the south is gradually being decommissioned and developed.
The new Volkstheater by LRO Architects opened on the Tumblingerstrasse site on 15 October 2021. Right next to it is the Bahnwärter Thiel, an area with an interim use as subculture with a vibrant nightlife. On the eastern part of the site, around 420 flats are to be built. In the Lagerhausstraße, the former ship „Alte Utting“ has found a new harbour on a decomissioned bridge and has been converted to a special location with gastronomy and culture since 2018.
